Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

Trip Overview

Ghorepani, Ghandrung, Poon-Hill trek located in Annapurna region, is truly called as one the best short trekking in Nepal. The route explores foothills of central Himalaya passing through different villages providing spectacular views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. It starts from Pokhara through beautiful rhododendron, oak forest and green hills from where we can have excellent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Nilgiri north-south, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, The Fishtail mountain, Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Mardi Himal, Lamjung Himal and more. The Poon Hill is one of the best points of this trek offering panoramic view these mountains and sunrise view.

The day after your arrival, we manage the program of sightseeing Kathmandu and Bhaktapur city with wonderful welcome dinner. Third day you will arrive at Pokhara after nearly 7 hours long drive from Kathmandu. The real walking begins from Nayapul. While trekking along to Ulleri and Ghorepani, you marvel at colorful orchids and clear views of the miraculous high mountains- Mt. Annapurna (8091 m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m). Upon reaching the final destination, Tatopani via Poon Hill (3210m) is a reward in itself, perhaps one of the most beautiful viewpoints on earth. The added presence of rice terraces completes the picture making it a photographer's paradise. Then, you caught the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk and enjoy the ethnic hospitality under newly introduced “Home-Stay” program along with the cultural magnificence of Gurung Museum. Trekking through the Rhododendron forest that bloom with red flowers during the springtime, descending down to Birethanti, passing by waterfalls and few small villages and settlements heightens our thrilling experiences. We further walk to Nayapul and then drive to Pokhara which announces the end of this short but marvelous trek.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival day, reception and transfer to hotel, welcome dinner and overnight at hotel

We will greet you at the airport and transfer to your hotel. You have time to settle in and fresh up after a long fight. When you arrived at noon you will have a time to enjoy the tourist atmosphere in Thamel at the night.

DAY 02: Sightseeing of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur city, trek preparation an overnight at hotel

After breakfast you will be taken for a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley and Bhaktapur city. You can visit the center of pilgrimage Pashupatinath Temple and Swyambhunath, very ancient and essentially enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage sites, also the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. Visit Bhaktapur, the city of pottery with Durbar Square full of Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments. On a journey back to the hotel, you can explore the local areas and lifestyle. We will discuss and check your preparation for trekking.

DAY 03: Drive to Pokhara (930m) - 7 hours -  overnight at hotel

Today we will take a tourist bus to Pokhara (about 6-7 hours’ drive) via scenic Prithvi Highway, enjoying shortstops for lunch and breakfast and scenic beauty all the way around. Upon arrival at Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel, where you can enjoy your spare time at lakeside. You can relax at Phewa Lake, surrounded by the Annapurna Himalaya Range.

DAY 04: Drive to Nayapul (New bridge) – 1 hour - trek to Tikhedhunga and overnight at guest house

Your journey to Annapurna Ghorepani Poon Hill trek begins. A car drives for about 1 and half hour through large village Lumle brings you to Nayapul. The trek starts from here, dropping at first on a staircase and then traversing high above the river on a wide, stone-paved trail to a large and prosperous town Birethanti (1000m). Trekking trail follows winding bamboo forests and waterfalls with plunge pools inviting you for a refreshing swim. After lunch at village climb steadily up the side of the valley to reach Hille (1510m) and after a short walking, you will arrive at Tikhedhunga, where you will spend the overnight at guest house.

DAY 05: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani – 6 hours – and overnight at guest house

The trail crosses Tikhedhunga river on a suspension bridge, then drops and crosses the Bhurungdi Khola on a large bridge at 1520m. The trail ascends on a stone staircase that is said to have more than 3300 steps. The continues to the large Magar village of Ulleri (2080m). From Ulleri the trail gently climbs through pastures and cultivated fields. You walk up beside cascading river through refreshingly cool oak and Rhododendron forest. The trail crosses two sparkling clear streams, a small ridge, and another stream before making short climb to Nangathanti (2460m). We have a little rest with lunch here at Nangathanti. In winter the trail can be covered with snow. The day destination Ghorepani (2750m) is reached after about an hour past Nangathanti

DAY 06: Ghorepani to Tadapani via Poon Hill - 6 hours - overnight at guest house

At the early morning we climb to Poon Hill (3210m), one of the best Himalaya viewpoints in Nepal, provides an unobstructed view of sunrise over the high Himalayas. The spectacular panorama stretches from Dhaulagiri I (8167m) and Tukuche (6920m) to Nilgiri (6940m), Annapurna South, Annapurna I (8091m), Hiuchuli (6441m) and Tarke Kang (7193m). Gangapurna (7454m), Lamjung Himal (6986m) and the Mt. Fishtail (Machhapuchhre 6997m) make your breath and eyes caught. Watching beautiful sunrise is a defining moment with lots of pleasure and tranquility.

After breakfast, our trek to Tadapani starts. A short early morning climb to the Deurali pass for a spectacular panorama over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. The trail descends steeply through the dense moss-covered forest with rich bird life to Tadapani which also provides a close-up sunset view

DAY 07: Trek from Tatopani to Ghandruk – 3 hours - overnight at guest house

Today trekking trail descends steeply through rhododendron forests to Baise Kharka. You will encounter monkeys and wide varieties of birds. The right-hand trail makes a short, steep descent among rocks to a stream crossing then leads out a ridge towards Ghandruk. Ghandruk is the second largest Gurung village in Nepal. You can explore the maze-like streets of this thriving Gurung settlement. Enjoying a good mountain view of Annapurna South and Fishtail, you spend an overnight here in the guest house.

DAY 08: Trek from Ghandruk to Birethanti to Nayapul – 3 hours - then drive to Pokhara and overnight at hotel

Today we walk down to the village. The trail passes through small hamlets, terraced rice fields and subtropical forests giving a very beautiful glimpse. We will mostly follow the ever-flowing Modi Khola with an easy and pleasant walk to Birethanti and then gentle route to reach Banthanthi. We continue our walk to Nayapul and catch a private vehicle to drive to Pokhara. You will be transferred to your hotel.

DAY 09: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu and overnight at hotel

You will take a drive to Kathmandu. In the evening you can have your last night in Nepal enjoying the Nepali cultural dinner show, taking some beautiful snaps and making up your mind about the returning journey. You can have greetings exchanging among friends and with all Nepalese people.

DAY 10: Final Departure
